Party On The Moon® had the good fortune to open a concert for Kenny Loggins, one of America’s most successful singer songwriters, this past Thursday night. From the stage, he told the story of his songwriting experience with singer/songwriter Michael McDonald. The first song they wrote together was “What A Fools Believes”, which became a big hit and won a Grammy for the Doobie Brothers. They had set the bar high on their first song. With big success comes the big pressure to do well. This pressure kept them from writing another song for fear they would fail.

Kenny told Michael, “Let’s get together and write a bad song, and get it out of the way. Then we can get on with the work.” Kenny was thinking long term. He knew if they got together and wrote songs, they would improve their craft and bring out the best in each other. And maybe something good would happen.

Kenny is saying a lot about the creative process in this story. Kenny was able to get the creative process going again by taking the pressure off Michael and himself, and allowing themselves the freedom to fail. No wonder Kenny Loggins is one of the most successful songwriters in the world. He does the work. He sits down, he writes the songs, and he has not allowed the fear of failure to stop him.

At the end of the day, it’s about the work. There is no short cut to mastery. If you have something you want to create, do the work and allow yourself the freedom to fail and learn.

The next song Michael and Kenny wrote together was “This Is It”, which reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts.

I had high expectations when Kenny and his band took the stage. I had heard he had a great show.  I was not disappointed. He’s an excellent guitar player and singer, and it’s easy to forget how many great songs he has written. I had also heard he was a nice guy, and after meeting him backstage, I can see why he is still in such high demand. He’s a true professional and a very cool guy.

Once again I got to see a master at work, and he taught me a lesson too. Don’t be afraid to fail.

Thanks Kenny!
