Set Backs – Set Ups

“Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of success was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”

Steve Jobs

I enjoy reading about the lives of people who have made a difference in the world. One thing I’ve learned in my study is they all had their share of set backs - from Henry Ford to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Tyler Perry. On the road to creating what you care about, you will have set backs. It’s our relationship to how we view those set backs that makes all the difference.

I like to think of set backs as a teacher. If a client is not pleased with a performance of one of our National Party Bands®, my job is to find out what the issues are. Was the song list not as good as it could have been? Did the sound engineer respond when the client asked that the volume be turned down? Were all the special requests by the client played well? Only when I know the issue or set back can we learn and move forward.

When Thomas Edison was asked how he kept going, after 10,000 failures, to invent the electric light bulb, his response was, “I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work.”

Our goal at National Party Bands® is to the have the best product and service in the country. Some of the best lessons we have learned came from a set back.

I encourage you to factor in set backs as you create the life and business you care about. Remember - when you have a set back, it’s not personal. It’s a process of learning. Use your set back as a set up for your success.
